Rare Glimpses of Old Jaffo
Opening date: 12/7/2016
Ending date: 19/10/2016
Rare photography exhibition from the Matson Collection
Thousands of years of history, people and their lifestyles, and scents and tastes that make up the texture of this unique city. This biblical city has welcomed people from near and far, through its land borders and vibrant port. This unique city was truly a gateway to Israel and the Middle East.
This exhibition is presented through the initiative of the Daniel Centers for Progressive Judaism, the umbrella organization of Mishkenot Ruth Daniel, guesthouse and cultural and educational center in Jaffo. Mishkenot Ruth Daniel has allowed tens of thousands of tourists and locals to experience the beauty of Jaffo through unique and interesting tours. This exhibition will provide tourists and locals the opportunity to see glimpses of Old Jaffo, before the establishment of the State of Israel.
In 1915, under the leadership of city governor, Hassan Beck, work began on the longest and busiest boulevard in Jaffo, Jamal Pasha Avenue (today referred to as Jerusalem Boulevard). On the occasion of the boulevard’s 100th birthday, we would like to take the opportunity to showcase rare photos of the boulevard, alongside other photos depicting Jaffo’s fascinating history.
About the collection
The collection of Eric and Edith Matson contains over 23,000 glass negatives, films and slides. This quality collection, consisting of images of the American Colony, is the most comprehensive and richest collection of photographs of Palestine and the city of Jaffo between the years 1898 – 1946. This collection creates a diverse mosaic of Jaffo’s humanity, revealing special places that existed before the creation of the State of Israel. This collection gives us a glimpse of both everyday life and dramatic events, like the outbreak of the Great Rebellion in 1936, the arrival of High Commissioner Sir Herbert Samuel, preparations of the legendary railway line running from Jaffo to Jerusalem, and many more formative moments.
Due to the age of these slides, cuts and scratches can seen during the photography production.
Some of the images were enlarged specifically for the exhibition to reveal details that have never been seen before.
