Yom Ha’Shoa: Belief in Times of Crisis
You are welcome to join us at Beit Daniel as we mark Yom Ha’Shoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
20:00 – Memorial prayer, led by Rabbi Galia Sadan, Cantor Freddy Faur and musician Dvir Or
20:45 – Who was Yosl Bakover?
In 1953, an anonymous Yiddish author living in Buenos Aires sent to Tel Aviv a will written in the Warsaw Ghetto. From then on, the letter received a life of its own and has since been published as an authentic document that was trapped in the rubble of the Ghetto. The story generated excitement and interest and has since been translated and published in German, French and English. Additionally, intellectuals such as Thomas Mann and Emmanuel Levinas have commented on this work. Later, it turned out that this document was written as a literary work only in 1946 and is seen as a precise way to convey the deepest layers of human life during the Holocaust. Levinas describes the story as, “A beautiful and true text, true as only a story can be.”
The actor Avi Hadash will act out different parts from the story, following which Rabbi Meir Azari and Rabbi Professor Yehoda Amir will discuss in depth the topic of belief in times of crisis.
One of the major themes that is raised in this story is of God’s concealment and lack of divine providence for the People of Israel during the Holocaust and the people’s loneliness, suffering and despair. Azari and Amir will discuss the human spirit during times of chaos, despair and loss.
Entrance is free, however, registration is required. Please send the number of people attending to office@beit-daniel.org.il.
