Tel Aviv, born out of Jaffa, fulfilled the vision of a modern city within a Jewish context.  Working with the ideas of modern Zionism, the fathers of Tel Aviv envisioned a booming metropolis in a brand new country.  Today, Tel Aviv has grown into an exciting, liberal, and cultural urban experience filled with excellent cuisine, hidden treasures, and a fascinating story.  The seminar delves into the roots of the city, the vision of its founders, and asks questions about what it means Jewish in a modern world.

Jaffa: Coexistence, political complexities, and a vision for a positive shared future
The ancient port city of Jaffa has always been a cultural crossroads and has seen the faces of many different governments and ruling bodies.  Throughout the complex history, Jaffa enjoyed periods of political harmony and endured times of hardship, but has always been a center for political thought and creative expression.  This seminar focuses on the complexities of a mixed city in Israel, draws on lessons from the past to understand Jaffa today, and uses the ancient city as a modern microcosm for the potential for coexistence in a region plagued with ethnic tension.  The group learns the history, interacts with the modern realities, and explores the progressive movements and organizations that work tirelessly to create a positive shared future in the picturesque city of Jaffa.
